Martinsburg WV

The biggest small town in West Virginia

As the largest city in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Martinsburg is big enough to have all the conveniences of a city, yet small enough to feel like a local community rather than a major metropolis.

Martinsburg has all the shopping and cultural activities of a city, with fairs and festivals throughout the year, a large downtown area, and several major retail centers that include national chain stores as well as local businesses.

It began as an industrial mill town, was hit hard by the economic downturn, but is now the fastest growing city in the state. Now is a great time to move to Martinsburg because home prices are still low coming out of the recession, the lowest in the area. The median price of a home in Martinsburg is $160,000, compared to $240,000 in Charles Town. You’ll find diverse housing choices as well – older neighborhoods with modest homes as well as newer home developments.

Martinsburg is intersected by Interstate 81 and a handful of U.S. and state highways that provide convenient access to Winchester, Hagerstown, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., leading it to be known as the Gateway to the Shenandoah Valley. It’s also the county seat of Berkeley County.

Employment opportunities abound in and around Martinsburg. In addition to the nearby National Air Guard base, federal government employers include the Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Coast Guard Operations Systems Center, U.S. Coast Guard National Maritime Center, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Veteran Administration Center. Major private employers include Quad/Graphics, Ecolab, Orgill, Macy's, and FedEx. In February 2015, it was announced that Procter & Gamble plans to build a $500 million facility near the city.

Thanks to the still-recovering housing market, you can find a really nice modern home at a significantly lower price than you would anywhere else. This is especially appealing when you consider that Martinsburg is the 9th-largest city in the state, with all the conveniences of city living and a thriving local economy.
